This guide explains the official IGNOU CGPA to percentage conversion formula, the grade scale, worked examples for BCA, MCA, and MBA, and links to a free calculator.
IGNOU CGPA to Percentage Formula (UGC Approved)
IGNOU follows the UGC-approved formula for converting CGPA to percentage:
Percentage = (CGPA β 0.75) Γ 10
This formula was recommended by UGC in 2018 and adopted by IGNOU and most Indian universities. The 0.75 offset accounts for the grade scale baseline. Simply multiplying CGPA by 10 is not correct and may inflate your percentage.
IGNOU Grade Scale and Grade Points
IGNOU assigns letter grades based on your percentage in each course, which then maps to grade points:
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | Grade Point | Description |
| A | 75β100% | 5.0 | Excellent |
| B | 60β74% | 4.0 | Very Good |
| C | 50β59% | 3.0 | Good |
| D | 40β49% | 2.0 | Satisfactory |
| E | Below 40% | 1.0 | Fail |
Your programme CGPA is the weighted average of grade points across all courses, weighted by their credit values.

Common Mistakes in CGPA Conversion
- Wrong formula: Using CGPA Γ 10 instead of (CGPA β 0.75) Γ 10. A CGPA of 7.0 converts to 62.5%, not 70%.
- Using CBSE formula: CBSE uses CGPA Γ 9.5, which is different from the UGC formula IGNOU follows.
- Rounding errors: Always round to two decimal places. Don't round intermediate calculations.
- Not considering individual course grades: Your programme CGPA is the weighted average, not the simple average of course grades.
