The IGNOU 30/70 Formula Explained

IGNOU calculates your final score using this weighted formula:

Final Percentage = (Assignment Marks × 0.30) + (TEE Marks × 0.70)

This means your assignments are worth 30% of your final grade, and the Term-End Exam is worth 70%. Both components are evaluated independently — you must pass each one separately.

Example Calculation

Let's say you scored 72/100 in assignments and 58/100 in the TEE:

• Assignment component: 72 × 0.30 = 21.6
• TEE component: 58 × 0.70 = 40.6
• Final Percentage: 21.6 + 40.6 = 62.2%

IGNOU Grading System 2026

IGNOU assigns letter grades based on your final percentage. Here's the complete grading system:

• A (75–100%): Excellent
• B (60–74%): Very Good
• C (50–59%): Good
• D (40–49%): Satisfactory
• E (Below 40%): Fail

To pass a course, you need a minimum of Grade D (40%) for Master's programmes or Grade D (35%) for Bachelor's programmes. However, you must also meet the minimum marks in each component separately.

IGNOU Passing Marks 2026

The passing requirements vary by programme level. You must clear both the assignment and TEE independently:

Bachelor's Programmes (BAG, BCA, BCOMG, BSW, BTS)

• Minimum 35% in assignments
• Minimum 35% in Term-End Exam
• Combined (30/70) must also be at least 35%

Master's & PG Diploma Programmes (MEG, MBA, MCA, MPS, MSO, MAH)

• Minimum 40% in assignments
• Minimum 40% in Term-End Exam
• Combined (30/70) must also be at least 40%

PhD Programmes

• Minimum 55% in both components (50% for reserved categories)

Important: Scoring 90% in TEE will not compensate for assignment marks below the minimum. Both components must independently meet the passing threshold.

How to Check Your IGNOU Grade Card

After the TEE results are declared, your marks for both assignments and exams appear on the TEE Grade Card. IGNOU typically updates grade cards 45–60 days after the exam. Results are uploaded in phases — some courses may appear before others.

If your grade card shows "Incomplete" for a course, it means either your assignment marks weren't submitted by the study centre or your TEE result is pending.

Does IGNOU use GPA or percentage?

IGNOU primarily uses percentage-based evaluation with letter grades. Some programmes also compute CGPA, but the 30/70 percentage formula is the standard across most courses.

Can I appear for the TEE if I haven't submitted assignments?

No. You must submit assignments before the deadline to be eligible for the Term-End Exam. Without assignment submission, you cannot fill the exam form for that course.

What if I fail in assignments but pass the TEE?

You must re-submit assignments in the next session and reappear for the TEE. Both components must be cleared together.
