Everything about IGNOU convocation 2026 — how to register, degree certificate download, convocation date, fees, and what to do if you can't attend.
The IGNOU convocation is the annual ceremony where graduates receive their degree certificates. If you've completed your programme, the convocation is the final step in your IGNOU journey. This guide covers everything about IGNOU convocation 2026 — registration process, fees, degree certificate download, and what to do if you can't attend in person.
What is IGNOU Convocation?
The IGNOU convocation is held annually (usually in February–March) at the university's headquarters in New Delhi and at regional centres across India. During the convocation, graduates receive their degree, diploma, or certificate from the Vice-Chancellor. Students who completed their programme in the previous academic year are eligible to attend.
How to Register for IGNOU Convocation
- Check eligibility: You must have completed all courses, submitted all assignments, and cleared all TEE exams for your programme
- Visit the convocation portal: IGNOU opens convocation registration on its official website, typically 2–3 months before the ceremony
- Pay the fee: The convocation fee is ₹600 for degree/diploma and ₹200 for certificate programmes
- Select your regional centre: Choose the regional centre where you want to attend (or select "degree by post" if you can't attend)
- Download the registration confirmation
IGNOU Degree Certificate
If you can't attend the convocation in person, you can still receive your degree certificate by post. IGNOU also provides a provisional certificate immediately after programme completion, which you can use for job applications or higher studies while waiting for the original degree.
The original degree certificate is sent to your registered address approximately 2–3 months after the convocation. You can also download a digital copy from the IGNOU portal in some cases.
What If I Miss the Convocation?
If you miss the convocation, your degree certificate will be sent to your registered address by post. However, this may take several months. If you need the certificate urgently:
- Use the provisional certificate issued immediately after programme completion
- Contact your regional centre to request expedited dispatch
- Check if a digital copy is available on the IGNOU portal
IGNOU Provisional Certificate vs Original Degree
The provisional certificate is issued right after you complete all requirements. It's a temporary document valid until you receive the original degree. Most employers and universities accept the provisional certificate for immediate purposes.
The original degree certificate is a formal document with the IGNOU seal, issued at the convocation. It's required for some government job applications and international credential evaluations.
IGNOU Migration Certificate
If you're pursuing higher studies at another university after IGNOU, you'll need a migration certificate. Apply for it through the IGNOU portal. The fee is ₹500, and it's typically dispatched within 4–6 weeks.
